to cover a daughter's head as if
in dueling
crowns
glamour is abroad
dark and dying
this glad good
day in mourning
every broach and every bead flaunted
catches the winter's sun
as if to
cut
Innocence with its edge
as once it did
The music
the dancing
say it quick
as some of us
are dead
the sex
do it
more quickly
was so much
fun
then
mournfully
Then comes
war
These old
white knights have long since left their field
lances broken
or retired
are taken off
to their beds
wrapped
only there
not in flags
but
by their black clad
armour clad women
now
with joules enough
and
will enough
they
carry on the fight
Here stand
soon to
lay
sad
proud men
with sticks
not swords
the waking
the waiting ghosts of Alamein and Normandy

called by bell
the godsons and grandsons of Mons and Passendale
the holders
the earners of titles
who lost friends
the long dying
not the short dying
the survivors of total war
That red hot
hellish hot
burning hot
spotlighted
skin lifting
killing

killing
night sky
and the fog filled
fume filled
lung filling
sand filled
limb lifting
hole filling
killing
killing
killing day
Of poisoned memory
They were boys
on those local slaughter fields
then
who witnessed murder with morals
and there are boys now
in our own dying days
thousands of miles and a generation away

War is total for all who die
But now the dying is not shared
It is hidden
and returns only
embarrassed

in flag draped

wooden
boxes
piece at a time
which no one sees

like old cold Jack himself
when they slipped closed the abbey doors
to sing of battles won
as a new one was only just begun
